Kasol and Parvati Valley on a Budget: 3-Day Plan With Chalal, Tosh, Manikaran and Kheerganga
A practical low-budget Kasol trip from Delhi or Chandigarh - reaching via Bhuntar, a 3-day Parvati Valley plan with Chalal, Manikaran and Tosh, the Kheerganga trek option, and per-person costs.
Kasol is where a lot of people take their first proper Himachal trip with friends, and it is easy to see why. It is reachable overnight from Delhi and Chandigarh, rooms are cheap, the Parvati river runs right through the village, and within an hour in either direction there are hot springs, a pilgrimage town, high villages and one of the most popular short treks in the state. It is also a place where a budget trip stays a budget trip, provided you avoid the peak weekends.
This guide covers getting there through Bhuntar, a three-day plan that works for a long weekend, the Kheerganga trek as an add-on, and what it all costs per person.
Getting there: everything goes through Bhuntar
Kasol sits about 30 km up the Parvati valley from Bhuntar, which is on the main Chandigarh-Manali highway a little before Kullu. There is no direct rail link, and the small airport at Bhuntar has limited, often expensive flights, so for most people the answer is the overnight bus.
- From Delhi: roughly 500-530 km to Bhuntar, 11-13 hours by overnight bus. HRTC and private operators run Manali-bound buses that stop at Bhuntar; some private operators also run directly to Kasol.
- From Chandigarh: about 220-250 km to Bhuntar, 6-8 hours.
- Bhuntar to Kasol: local buses towards Manikaran run regularly and take about 1-1.5 hours; shared and private taxis are faster and cost more.
- Self-drive: take the Kiratpur-Manali highway to Bhuntar, then turn off into the Parvati valley. The valley road is narrow and busy with buses; drive it in daylight.
Tell the bus conductor you are getting off at Bhuntar, because Manali buses do not wait long. Early morning arrivals usually find a local bus within the hour. For more on the main highway and how it fits into a longer circuit, see the Himachal road trip guide.
A 3-day Kasol and Parvati Valley plan
Day 1: arrive in Kasol, walk to Chalal
Arrive, check in and sleep for a few hours if the bus was rough. In the afternoon, cross the bridge over the Parvati and walk the forest path to Chalal, a small village about half an hour away along the river. It is the easiest walk in the valley and the one that shows why people come here: pine forest, the noise of the river, and very little else. Back in Kasol, the evening is for cafes and the riverside.
Day 2: Manikaran and up to Tosh
Manikaran is a few kilometres beyond Kasol and is famous for its gurudwara and the hot springs that steam out of the rocks along the river. The gurudwara serves langar and has hot water baths; respect the rules about covering your head and behaviour inside. From Manikaran, continue by bus or taxi to Barshaini at the end of the road, then walk or take a short ride up to Tosh, a village spread across a steep slope with views up the valley to snow peaks. You can stay the night in Tosh for something quieter, or return to Kasol.
Day 3: slow morning, back to Bhuntar
Keep the last day easy - a riverside breakfast, a short walk, and an afternoon bus or taxi back to Bhuntar for the evening bus home. If you have one more day, swap this for the Kheerganga trek below.
Adding the Kheerganga trek
Kheerganga is a meadow at roughly 2,900-3,000 m above Barshaini, known for a natural hot spring pool at the top. The trail is about 10-12 km one way and takes most people 4-6 hours up, through forest and past villages such as Nakthan, with some steep sections. It is a good first trek for fit beginners, but it is not a stroll.
- Start early from Barshaini so you are not walking down in the dark.
- Carry water, a rain layer and a warm layer even in summer; the top gets cold quickly after sunset.
- Rules on camping and overnight stays at the top have changed more than once in recent years. Check the current position locally before you plan to sleep there.
- Do not leave the main trail or trek alone. The Parvati valley has a long history of travellers going missing on side trails.
- Carry your rubbish back down. The meadow has suffered badly from litter.
Adding Kheerganga makes this a four-day trip - one day up, one day down - and adds a little for food and a night at the top.
When to go
- March to June - the main season, warm days and cool nights. May-June weekends get very busy.
- July to mid-September - monsoon. Landslides on the valley road and on the highway are a real risk, trails are slippery and the river runs high. Avoid unless you are flexible.
- Late September to November - clear skies and lower prices. Probably the best time.
- December to February - cold, with snow at Tosh and higher; Kheerganga is generally not advisable for beginners in deep winter.
Budget: low, mid and high
Per person, for a 3-day trip (2 nights in the valley plus overnight bus both ways) from Delhi, sharing rooms and local transport in a group of three or four. From Chandigarh, reduce the travel line by roughly a third.
Low budget
- Getting there and back: HRTC ordinary or semi-deluxe bus to Bhuntar plus local buses, ₹1,500-2,500 return
- Stay: hostel dorm or basic shared guesthouse room, 2 nights, ₹800-1,800
- Food: dhabas, langar at Manikaran, simple cafes, ₹1,000-1,800
- Local transport: local buses to Manikaran and Barshaini, ₹300-700
- Buffer: ₹500-1,000
Total: roughly ₹4,100-7,800 per person.
Mid budget
- Getting there and back: Volvo or AC sleeper plus shared taxi from Bhuntar, ₹2,600-4,000 return

- Local transport: shared taxis to Manikaran, Barshaini and Tosh, ₹800-1,500
- Buffer: ₹1,000-1,500
Total: roughly ₹8,200-14,000 per person.
High budget
- Getting there and back: private cab or self-drive split four ways, ₹4,500-8,000
- Stay: better riverside cottages or boutique stays, ₹5,000-10,000
- Food: restaurants throughout, ₹3,000-5,000
- Local transport and activities: private cab for the valley, guided Kheerganga trek with stay, ₹3,000-6,000
- Buffer: ₹1,500-3,000
Total: roughly ₹17,000-32,000 per person.
Practical notes
- ATMs are limited in Kasol and beyond; carry enough cash for Tosh and Kheerganga.
- Mobile networks are patchy above Manikaran. Tell someone your plan before you go up.
- Drugs are illegal, and police checks in the valley are common. The legal consequences are serious and very much not a budget item.
- Pack layers - the valley is warm at midday and cold at night most of the year.
Going with a group
Kasol is one of the easiest trips to do with people you met online - the bus is fixed, the walks are short and everyone ends up in the same few cafes anyway. You can find a group heading there on SastiTripsWale and split rooms and taxis, or post your own trip with your dates.
