8 Weekend Trips Under ₹5,000 from Delhi (With Real Budget Breakdowns)
Rishikesh, Jaipur, Agra, Lansdowne, Mussoorie, Nainital, Kasauli and Alwar - how to reach each from Delhi, what to do in two days, and a line-by-line budget that stays near ₹5,000 per person.
A ₹5,000 weekend from Delhi is very doable - but only if three things go your way: you travel overnight or early, you share a room, and you do not go on the same long weekend as half of NCR. Get those right and every place on this list fits the budget with room for a decent meal.
Each budget below assumes one person, two days, sharing a room and local transport with two or three others, and travelling at the low end - buses or sleeper trains, simple stays, dhaba food. They are ranges, not quotes. For how to build a budget like this for any trip, see our low, mid and high trip budget planner.
1. Rishikesh
Getting there: overnight bus from Delhi, or a train to Haridwar and a local bus or shared auto for the last stretch. Around 6-8 hours door to door.
Two days: walk the ghats and the old suspension-bridge stretch on the first morning, watch the evening Ganga aarti, then spend day two on a short river-rafting run or a hike to a waterfall nearby, with cafe time in between. Rafting is the one optional cost that can push you over.
- Return bus or train plus local transfers: ₹1,000-1,600
- One night in a hostel dorm or shared room: ₹500-1,000
- Food for two days: ₹800-1,200
- Local autos and shared rides: ₹300-500
- Rafting (optional, short stretch): ₹600-1,000
Roughly ₹3,200-5,300 per person with rafting, about ₹2,600-4,300 without.
2. Jaipur
Getting there: frequent trains and buses; around 5-6 hours by road and a little less on the faster trains.
Two days: Amer Fort in the morning, Jal Mahal on the way back, Hawa Mahal and the City Palace area in the afternoon, Nahargarh for sunset. Day two is for Jantar Mantar, the old bazaars and a long lunch. Indian visitors pay modest entry fees, and a combined ticket for the main monuments usually works out cheaper than buying each one.
- Return bus or train: ₹800-1,600
- One night in a hostel or budget hotel, shared: ₹500-1,000
- Food for two days: ₹800-1,200
- Autos and app cabs between sights: ₹400-800
- Monument entries: ₹300-600
Roughly ₹2,800-5,200 per person.
3. Agra
Getting there: the expressway makes it about 3.5-4 hours by road, and fast trains take 2-3 hours. Agra works as a long day trip, but one night lets you see the Taj at sunrise.
Two days: the Taj Mahal early (it is closed on Fridays), Agra Fort later in the morning, Mehtab Bagh across the river for sunset. On day two, Fatehpur Sikri is about an hour away and worth the half day.
- Return train or bus: ₹500-1,200
- One night in a budget hotel, shared: ₹500-1,000
- Food for two days: ₹700-1,100
- Autos and a shared ride to Fatehpur Sikri: ₹500-900
- Monument entries: ₹300-700
Roughly ₹2,500-4,900 per person.
4. Lansdowne
Getting there: bus or train to Kotdwar, then a shared jeep or local bus up the hill. Around 6-8 hours in total.
Two days: a quiet, clean cantonment town. Walk to the Tip-in-Top viewpoint, potter around Bhulla Tal and the old church, and take the forest walks. Day two can be a trip to the Tarkeshwar Mahadev temple in the deodar forest, or simply a long, slow breakfast. There is very little to spend money on, which is the point.
- Return transport via Kotdwar: ₹1,000-1,800
- One night in a homestay or guesthouse, shared: ₹600-1,200
- Food for two days: ₹800-1,200
- Shared jeeps and local rides: ₹400-800
Roughly ₹2,800-5,000 per person.
5. Mussoorie
Getting there: overnight bus, or a train to Dehradun followed by a bus or shared cab up the hill. Around 7-9 hours in total.
Two days: Mall Road and Camel’s Back Road on day one, then the quieter Landour side on day two - the walk up to Lal Tibba and the cafes along the way. Kempty Falls is popular but crowded; skip it on a weekend.
- Return transport via Dehradun: ₹1,200-2,000
- One night in a guesthouse or hostel, shared: ₹600-1,300
- Food for two days: ₹900-1,300
- Local taxis and shared rides: ₹300-700
Roughly ₹3,000-5,300 per person.
6. Nainital
Getting there: overnight train to Kathgodam, then a bus or shared taxi for the last hour or so. Overnight buses also run. Around 7-9 hours in total.
Two days: a boat on Naini Lake, a walk along the Mall, and the ropeway or a hike to one of the viewpoints above town on day one. On day two, take a local bus or a shared cab to Bhimtal or Sattal for a quieter lake.
- Return train or bus plus transfers: ₹1,200-2,000
- One night in a guesthouse, shared: ₹600-1,300
- Food for two days: ₹900-1,300
- Boating, ropeway and local rides: ₹500-800
Roughly ₹3,200-5,400 per person.
7. Kasauli
Getting there: train or bus to Kalka or Dharampur, then a local bus or taxi up the hill. Around 6-8 hours from Delhi.
Two days: a small, walkable cantonment town of pine forest and colonial buildings. Walk the Mall, Christ Church and the Gilbert Trail, and catch sunset from one of the ridges. Some viewpoints sit inside military areas with ID checks and restricted hours, so check before you plan around them. The Kasauli weekend guide has the detail.
- Return transport via Kalka: ₹1,000-2,000
- One night in a guesthouse or homestay, shared: ₹700-1,500
- Food for two days: ₹800-1,200
- Local buses and taxis: ₹300-700
Roughly ₹2,800-5,400 per person.
8. Alwar and Bhangarh
Getting there: the closest option on the list - trains and buses take around 3-4 hours. Neemrana is on the way, but its fort is a heritage hotel and priced accordingly, so Alwar is the cheaper base.
Two days: Bala Quila above the town, the City Palace area and Siliserh Lake on day one. On day two, go to Bhangarh, the ruined fort town famous for its ghost stories - an archaeological site where entry after sunset is not allowed, so start early.
- Return train or bus: ₹500-1,000
- One night in a budget hotel, shared: ₹500-1,000
- Food for two days: ₹700-1,100
- Shared cab or local transport to Bhangarh and around town: ₹700-1,300
- Entries: ₹100-300
Roughly ₹2,500-4,700 per person.
How the price stays under ₹5,000
- Travel overnight. A Friday night bus or sleeper train means you arrive on Saturday morning and need only one night’s stay, not two.
- Share rooms properly. Three or four in a room is the biggest single saving after transport. A double booked for two costs each person noticeably more.
- Avoid long weekends. The same room can cost two to three times as much on a long weekend, and buses sell out or get surge-priced.
- Eat where locals eat. Dhabas and thali places keep food at a few hundred rupees a day.
- Pick one paid activity. Rafting, a ropeway or a boat ride - one is fine, three is a different budget.
- Share local transport. One cab for four is close to the price of four auto rides, and much more comfortable.
When it will not stay under ₹5,000
Be honest with yourself about these. Long weekends, Christmas to New Year, the summer school holidays and festival weekends push the hill stations well past this budget, sometimes by double. Travelling solo with a private room, booking at the last minute, or hiring a cab for the whole trip will also take you into the mid budget below. None of that is wrong - just plan for the real number.

Going with a group
Every number on this page depends on having two or three people to share a room and a cab with. If your friends are busy, that is exactly what SastiTripsWale is for: find a group heading there on your dates, or post your own trip with the destination and a per-person budget and let people join you. Hosts publish an estimate up front, and the group settles money among themselves - our guide on splitting trip costs fairly makes that part painless.
