The Ladakh Road Trip Guide: Manali or Srinagar, and Why Acclimatisation Decides Everything

Ladakh is the trip most Indian riders want to do once, and the one where the gap between how it is planned and how it should be planned is widest. The photographs are of empty tarmac and turquoise lakes. The thing that actually determines whether the trip works is a medical question: how fast you gain altitude.

Leh sits at about 3,500 m. Khardung La is around 5,350 m, Chang La about 5,300 m, and Umling La - the highest motorable road in the world - is roughly 5,800 m. These are altitudes at which a fit twenty-five-year-old can become seriously unwell within hours, and fitness is not protective. Every season, people are evacuated from Pangong and Nubra, and most of them got there too fast.

The two roads in

Srinagar - Leh (NH-1), about 420 km

Srinagar to Sonamarg, over Zoji La (3,530 m) to Drass and Kargil, then over Fotu La (4,108 m) and Namika La to Leh. Two days with a night in Kargil is standard.

This is the road to come in on, and the reason is altitude profile rather than scenery. Srinagar is at 1,585 m and Kargil at 2,680 m, so you gain height in two manageable steps and arrive in Leh already partly acclimatised. It is also the gentler road surface of the two.

Manali - Leh, about 470 km

Manali through the Atal Tunnel to Lahaul, then Baralacha La (4,890 m), Nakee La, Lachulung La (5,059 m), the Moore Plains, and Tanglang La (5,328 m) into Leh. Two days with a night at Jispa or Sarchu, or a brutal single day that people do and should not.

It is the more spectacular of the two by a distance, and it is the one that hurts. Sarchu is at about 4,300 m, which means the standard itinerary has you sleeping at well over 4,000 m on your second night out of a 2,000 m town. That is the single most common cause of altitude sickness on the whole route.

Acclimatisation: the part that is not optional

Acute mountain sickness starts to matter above roughly 2,500 m and is a serious, real risk everywhere in Ladakh. It does not correlate with age, fitness or how much you want it. Strong young riders get it as often as anyone, partly because they push harder.

1. Spend two full nights in Leh before going anywhere higher. Not one. This is the single highest-value rule in the whole guide, and it is the one people skip because they have limited leave.
2. On day one in Leh, do nothing. Walk to the market. That is the day's plan.
3. Then go up in steps and sleep low - Nubra (about 3,050 m at Hunder) is a good second stage even though you cross Khardung La at 5,350 m to reach it, because you descend to sleep.
4. Drink far more water than feels necessary. Skip alcohol entirely for the first two nights, and ideally the whole trip.
5. Know the symptoms: headache that painkillers do not touch, nausea, breathlessness at rest, no appetite, disturbed sleep, confusion.
6. Confusion, breathlessness at rest, or a cough with frothy sputum means descend now. Not tomorrow morning. These are the signs of the two forms that kill, and descending is the only reliable treatment.

Acetazolamide (Diamox) is commonly used as a prophylactic, and plenty of people on these roads take it. It is a prescription medicine with real side effects and interactions - talk to a doctor before the trip rather than buying it in Leh on someone else's advice. It also does not make it safe to ascend fast; it shifts the odds, it does not remove the rule.

Where to go once you are there

• Leh and around - Shanti Stupa, Leh palace, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries, the Indus valley. Two days, one of which is your first acclimatisation day anyway.
• Nubra valley - over Khardung La to Diskit and Hunder. Sand dunes at 3,000 m, the big Maitreya statue, and on to Turtuk, a Balti village that was on the other side of the line until 1971 and is one of the most interesting places in Ladakh. Two to three days.
• Pangong Tso - over Chang La, about 5-6 hours from Leh. The lake is at 4,350 m and the accommodation is camps on the shore. Sleeping at Pangong is a real altitude commitment, not a scenic choice.
• Tso Moriri and Hanle - further, emptier, and for most people better than Pangong. Add two to three days.
• Umling La - the highest road in the world, via Hanle. A pilgrimage for riders. Genuinely dangerous to attempt without being well acclimatised first.

Matching route to days

• 5-6 days (flying in): fly to Leh, two days acclimatising, Nubra, back. Flying in means arriving at 3,500 m in an hour, which makes the two rest days more important, not less.
• 9-10 days (one road, by vehicle): Manali or Srinagar in, Leh, Nubra, Pangong, out the same way.
• 12-14 days: Srinagar in, Leh, Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Manali out. This is the complete trip and it does not compress.
• Do not attempt: Delhi to Leh and back in a week. People try it every summer. It is the itinerary behind most of the evacuations.

Season - a genuinely short window

• Mid-May to late June - both highways open as snow clearing finishes; Manali-Leh usually opens later than Srinagar-Leh. Expect water crossings at their highest from snowmelt.
• July to August - the reliable months, and the busiest. The Ladakh side gets little monsoon, but the approaches do: the Manali side and the Srinagar side both see landslides.
• September to early October - the best time. Clear air, thin crowds, stable roads, cold nights.
• Mid-October onwards - the passes close. Leh is reachable only by air in winter, which is its own extraordinary trip (the Chadar trek) and a completely different kind of planning.

Permits

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the protected areas - Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri, Hanle, Turtuk and Dah-Hanu among them. It is applied for online or through the DC office in Leh, costs little, and requires ID. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead, with different rules and some areas closed.

• Carry several photocopies. Checkposts keep one each, and there are more checkposts than you expect.
• Permits are typically issued for named routes and dates - get them for everywhere you might go, not just where you have booked.
• Rules here change. Check the current position in Leh rather than relying on this or any other article.

Vehicle notes

• Motorcycles - ground clearance and tyre condition matter far more than displacement. Carry a puncture kit, a spare clutch and accelerator cable, spare fuses, and know how to use all of it. Mechanics between Keylong and Leh are effectively nonexistent.
• Cars - a standard hatchback gets to Leh on either highway in good conditions and gets to Pangong and Nubra. Higher clearance is strongly preferable for the water crossings, which are deeper in the afternoon than the morning because of snowmelt.
• Fuel - the Tandi pump (near Keylong) to Leh is roughly 365 km with nothing in between and is the longest fuel gap on any Indian highway. Fill at Tandi. Carry a jerrycan on a bike. On the Srinagar side, fill at Kargil.
• Cold - it freezes at night in Ladakh in every month of the riding season. The Himalayan packing list is written for exactly this.
• Oxygen - carry a canister or two per vehicle. They are not a treatment for AMS and they are not a substitute for descending, but they buy time in a bad hour.

Money and groups

Ladakh is the strongest argument for riding in a group that Indian motorcycling has. Not for cost - though fuel, a support vehicle and camp rooms all split the usual way - but because a solo breakdown at 5,000 m with no phone signal and no traffic is a genuinely serious situation, and a second rider makes it an inconvenience.
