Uttar Pradesh by Road: Agra, Varanasi, Lucknow and the Expressways That Changed Everything

Uttar Pradesh is the one state in this list where the roads are the reason to drive rather than the obstacle. Three expressways - the Yamuna, the Agra-Lucknow and the Purvanchal - run almost the full width of the state at speeds no hill road will ever offer, and they have quietly turned a trip that used to take ten days into one you can do properly in five.

What has not changed is the cities. Varanasi is not a place you drive through; Lucknow is not a lunch stop. The planning problem in UP is the opposite of Himachal: the driving is easy, so the temptation is to add another city instead of another day.

The expressways, and what they actually do

These are access-controlled, tolled, six-lane roads with no crossing traffic. Treat the times below as real, unlike mountain estimates.

• Yamuna Expressway - Greater Noida to Agra, 165 km, about two hours. This is what makes Agra a day trip from Delhi.
• Agra-Lucknow Expressway - 302 km, about three and a half hours. Agra to Lucknow used to be a full day.
• Purvanchal Expressway - Lucknow to Ghazipur, 341 km, about four hours, with an exit near Ayodhya and a straightforward run on to Varanasi.
• End to end - Delhi to Varanasi is roughly 900 km and, on a clear day with disciplined stops, about eleven to twelve hours of driving. That is a long day but a single one.

What each city needs

Agra - one full day, ideally two

The Taj at sunrise is worth the early start and is a completely different experience from the Taj at eleven in the morning, when the crowd arrives. It is closed on Fridays. Agra Fort deserves two hours and gets twenty minutes from most visitors, and Itmad-ud-Daulah - the "Baby Taj" - is nearly empty and one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.

Fatehpur Sikri is 40 km west and needs half a day of its own. The abandoned Mughal capital is, if anything, more atmospheric than the Taj, because there is nobody in it. Mathura and Vrindavan - half a day, and the crowd decides

About 60 km north of Agra, just off the Yamuna Expressway, so it costs almost nothing to include. Ordinary weekends are manageable; Holi and Janmashtami turn both towns into something you should only attempt on purpose and on foot, having parked a long way out.

Lucknow - two days

The most underrated city in north India for a road trip. The Bara Imambara and its labyrinth, the Residency ruins, Hazratganj in the evening, and food that is a legitimate reason to drive 500 km on its own. Traffic in the old city is slow and the lanes are narrow - park and walk rather than trying to drive between sights.

Ayodhya - one day

Now well connected by the Purvanchal Expressway and much easier to reach than it was. Expect crowds and expect large managed queues; go early, and treat the parking arrangements as the main logistical problem rather than the driving.

Varanasi - two days minimum, and do not drive in it

Park the vehicle wherever you are staying and do not move it again. The old city between the ghats is a network of lanes that a car physically cannot enter and a motorcycle should not try. The two things worth building the trip around are dawn on the river - take a boat, from the water is the only way the ghats make sense - and the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh in the evening. Sarnath is 10 km out and quiet.

Matching route to days

• 2 days: Agra and Fatehpur Sikri from Delhi, with Mathura on the way back.
• 3 days: Agra and Lucknow. The expressway makes this genuinely comfortable.
• 5 days: Delhi - Agra - Lucknow - Varanasi, one way, flying or training back. This is the best version of a UP trip for most people.
• 7 days: the same, adding Ayodhya and Prayagraj, and returning by road.
• Add-on: from Varanasi, Bodh Gaya in Bihar is about 250 km, and Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is roughly 400 km from Agra via Orchha - both are natural extensions rather than separate trips.

The fog is the season problem

UP does not have an altitude problem or a landslide problem. It has a December-and-January fog problem, and on a 100 km/h expressway that is a more dangerous one than either.

• Late December to mid-January - dense morning fog across the whole Indo-Gangetic plain, regularly down to under 50 m of visibility, and worst between about 5am and 10am. Multi-vehicle pile-ups on the expressways in these conditions are an annual event.
• If you are on the road in this window: do not start before the fog lifts, use low beam and hazard lights, keep far more distance than feels necessary, and never stop on the carriageway - pull completely off it.
• November and February - the best weather of the year. Cool, clear, and the reason this is peak season.
• March to June - 40-45°C on the plains. Drive early, and read the heat section of the Rajasthan guide; it applies here too.
• July to September - monsoon. Waterlogging in the cities and on service roads rather than the expressways themselves, which drain well.

Practical notes

• Night driving - avoid it on the ordinary state highways, where unlit tractors and stray cattle are constant. The expressways are far safer after dark but are also where wildlife strikes and driver fatigue bite hardest.
• Fuel and food - the expressways have proper plazas but they are spaced out. Fill before you get on, not 30 km in.
• Parking - the real cost of a UP city trip. Budget for paid parking at every monument and every old-city hotel, and accept that you will walk.
• Documents - licence, RC, insurance, PUC. Expressway enforcement is camera-based and speeding tickets arrive by post.

Money and groups

UP is the cheapest big road trip in north India per kilometre and the most toll-heavy. Because tolls and fuel are both fixed costs, it is also the state where the arithmetic of a full car is most stark: the same Delhi-Varanasi-Delhi trip costs each of four people less than half what it costs each of two.
