Assam and Meghalaya by Road: The Northeast Trip That Actually Fits a Week

Most people who want to "do the northeast" open a map, see eight states, and give up. The way in is to ignore seven of them on the first trip. Assam and Meghalaya together need no permits for Indian nationals, share one airport, have good roads by regional standards, and contain enough that a week is genuinely full rather than rushed.

Everything below starts from Guwahati, which is the practical gateway for the whole region. Driving to Guwahati from mainland north India is a serious undertaking - roughly 1,900 km from Delhi - so the honest advice is to fly in and hire or rent a vehicle there, or ship a motorcycle by train.

The geography, in one paragraph

Assam is the Brahmaputra valley: flat, hot, humid, green, with tea gardens and the national parks. Meghalaya is the plateau immediately south of it, which you climb in about two hours from Guwahati and which is 10°C cooler, permanently green, and one of the wettest places on earth. The trip is essentially a loop between those two levels, and every drive is either up or down.

The core route

Guwahati - one day

Kamakhya temple on the hill, the Brahmaputra itself from Umananda island, and the state museum. Not the reason to come, but a sensible place to land, sort the vehicle out and sleep.

Kaziranga - two days, three if you can

About 195 km east of Guwahati on NH-27, roughly four to five hours. This is the one-horned rhino park, and unlike a lot of Indian wildlife tourism, sightings are close to guaranteed - the density is extraordinary. Two safaris in different ranges is the right amount: a morning jeep in the Central (Kohora) range and a second in Western (Bagori) or Eastern (Agoratoli).

• The park is closed in the monsoon, roughly mid-May to late October, because the Brahmaputra floods it. This single fact determines when an Assam trip can happen.
• Elephant safaris and jeep safaris book out in peak season. Book before you arrive rather than at the gate.
• Early morning is not a preference here - the animals are visible at dawn and gone by mid-morning.

Shillong - two days

From Kaziranga it is about 300 km and seven hours; from Guwahati, about 100 km and three. The climb onto the plateau is the nicest driving of the trip. Shillong itself is a busy hill town with genuinely bad traffic in the centre and an excellent live-music culture; Umiam Lake on the way in is the view everybody stops for.

Cherrapunji (Sohra) - one to two days

About 55 km south of Shillong, and the drive takes two hours because the road is slow, not because it is far. Cherrapunji and nearby Mawsynram trade the title of wettest inhabited place on earth. What you come for:

• Nohkalikai Falls - a 340 m single drop into a gorge. Spectacular in the monsoon, a thin trickle in March.
• Seven Sisters (Nohsngithiang) Falls - a wall of parallel falls off the plateau edge.
• Mawsmai and Arwah caves - limestone, easy to walk, genuinely good.
• The living root bridges - Ficus roots trained across streams over decades. The single-decker at Mawlynnong is a short walk. The double-decker at Nongriat is a 3,500-step descent and the same back up, takes most of a day, and is not a casual stroll - people underestimate this one badly.

Dawki and Mawlynnong - one day

About 80 km from Cherrapunji. The Umngot river at Dawki is the clear-water boat ride the region is famous for, and it is only clear in the dry season - in the monsoon it runs brown and the photographs you have seen are impossible. Mawlynnong nearby markets itself as Asia's cleanest village, and while that is a tourism-board line, the place is pleasant and has a root bridge.

Matching route to days

• 4 days: Guwahati, Shillong, Cherrapunji. Skip Kaziranga.
• 6-7 days: the full core loop - Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, back to Guwahati. This is the trip.
• 9-10 days: add Majuli, the world's largest river island, reached by ferry from Jorhat - slow, quiet and completely unlike the rest of it. Or add the Garo hills in western Meghalaya, which almost nobody visits.
• 2 weeks: add Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang) or Nagaland. Both need more time than people allow and one of them needs a permit - see below.

The monsoon: read this before you book

Everywhere else in India, "avoid the monsoon" is straightforward advice. In Meghalaya it is a genuine trade-off, because the rain is the attraction.

• October to April - the dry season, and the right answer for a first trip. Clear skies, the Umngot river is actually transparent, Kaziranga is open, roads are reliable. November to February is cool and lovely; March and April are warm and hazy.
• May to September - the monsoon, and Cherrapunji receives an amount of rain that has to be seen. The waterfalls are at full force and the plateau is impossibly green. But: Kaziranga is shut, the Umngot is brown, landslides close plateau roads, treks are dangerous, and you will see the inside of cloud more than any view.
• The compromise - late September or early October. The rain is tailing off, everything is still green, the falls are still running, and Kaziranga reopens.

Permits, and what needs one

This is where the northeast gets a reputation it half deserves. For Indian nationals:

• Assam and Meghalaya - no permit. Nothing to arrange.
• Arunachal Pradesh - an Inner Line Permit is required, applied for online in advance.
• Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur - requirements have changed repeatedly in recent years, in both directions. Check the current position with the state government rather than an old blog post before you rely on it.
• Foreign nationals - a different and stricter set of rules across the region. Check before booking anything.

Carry the actual documents for the vehicle - licence, RC, insurance, PUC. Inter-state checkposts here do look, and Meghalaya charges an entry fee for out-of-state vehicles at the border.

Vehicle and practical notes

• Cars - a standard hatchback does the whole core loop. Clearance matters on the smaller Meghalaya roads after a wet spell, where potholes fill and you cannot judge depth.
• Motorcycles - excellent in the dry season and genuinely demanding in the wet, because plateau rain plus a loose surface plus a gorge edge is an unforgiving combination. Rain gear that actually works is not optional here, it is the trip.
• Fuel - fill in Guwahati, Shillong and Cherrapunji. Pumps on the smaller Meghalaya roads are sparse and some close early.
• Cash - card acceptance thins out fast outside Guwahati and Shillong. Carry more cash than you would for a trip in the north.
• Daylight - the northeast is at the eastern edge of a single time zone, so it gets light very early and dark by about half past four in winter. Start at six, finish by four - a plan built on 7pm daylight will not work.
• Alcohol - dry-day and local restrictions vary by district and by state. Worth checking rather than assuming.

Money and groups

This is the one trip on this site where the flights, not the fuel, are the biggest line item, which changes the arithmetic. Book those early and independently. Once you are on the ground, the usual logic holds hard: a hired car or rented bikes, fuel and Kaziranga safari jeeps are all charged per vehicle, so the per-head cost of an identical trip falls sharply from two travellers to four.
